Colorado Rockies at Atlanta Braves: Projected Starting Pitchers

RHP Jon Gray vs. RHP Mike Foltynewicz

On the surface it appears Gray, the strapping Oklahoman starter, is having a poor season with two wins in five decisions through 32 1/3 innings. However, his subpar record is the product of poor run support, as he has a sparkling 2.78 ERA with 30 strikeouts.

Foltynewicz (elbow) will make his regular-season debut after being sidelined since the spring due to a sore elbow. He was roughed up in four minor-league rehab starts for Triple-A Gwinnett, getting lit up for a 6.11 ERA, so it will be interesting to see if he can shake that inconsistency in his first start back in the bigs.

Colorado Rockies at Atlanta Braves: By the Numbers

  • The Rockies enter play with four consecutive road victories, and they have won nine of the past 11 games overall. They’re also 4-1 in the past five against National League East opponents.
  • The Braves are skidding, winning just three of their past 10 games overall. Atlanta also won just three of Foltynewicz’s final 10 starts of the 2018 campaign. They are 1-5 in the past six home games against a right-handed starting pitcher, too.
  • The Rockies have won seven straight meetings in Atlanta, and they’re 4-0 in Gray’s past four assignments against the Braves.
  •  The Braves have dropped each of Foltynewicz’s past six starts vs. the Rockies, including 0-4 in his past four home outings vs. Colorado.

Colorado Rockies at Atlanta Braves: Picks and Betting Tips

Moneyline: The dominance of the Rockies (+114), especially by Gray against the Braves, as well as the shaky rehab appearances by Foltynewicz means Colorado is the play. Avoid the Braves, especially as moderate home favorites (-130).

Against the spread: The Rockies (+1.5, -190) should be avoided on the run line, as they’re a much better value on the moneyline. The Braves (-1.5, +160) might not get a lot of offense against Gray, and they might need it if Foltynewicz exhibits any rust.

Over/under: The UNDER 8.5 (-116) is the play here, as Gray has been awfully stingy lately, yielding just two earned runs over his past 19 2/3 innings over three outings. The under is 4-1 in Gray’s five outings this season, and 4-1 in his past five appearances against Atlanta, too. The under is 4-0 in Foltynewicz’s past four home starts vs. Colorado as well.
