NHL Picks and Bets - Playoff Hat Trick

The Carolina Hurricanes vs. Washington Capitals, Dallas Stars vs. Nashville Predators, and the Colorado Avalanche vs. Calgary Flames all gear up for Game 2 of their respective Stanley Cup Playoffs Quarterfinal series Saturday. Game 2 between the Boston Bruins and Toronto Maple Leafs will be covered in a separate article.

We went 5-6 in our playoff picks Friday – c’mon Lightning – and look to move above .500 with Saturday’s slate.

Carolina Hurricanes at Washington Capitals – 3 p.m. Eastern

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Moneyline: The Capitals are laying just -160 at home after dominating the Hurricanes in Game 1 Thursday and coming away with the series-opening 4-2 win. Ignore the 29-18 shot count in favor of Carolina after the Caps sat back with a commanding first-period lead. The home team’s the play for a 2-0 series lead.

Against the spread: Washington needed an empty-net goal in order to win by two Thursday after watching its huge lead slip away. Expect the reigning champs to attack even more and back -1.5 at +165 odds.

Over/under: Game 1 saw six goals scored, including the empty netter. The better payout Saturday is with UNDER 5.5 goals. Make that your play at +105.

Dallas Stars at Nashville Predators – 6 p.m. Eastern

Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

Moneyline: The Predators have had two days off to reflect on their Game 1 upset loss. Nashville was able to score the first goal of the game but gave up three straight before P.K. Subban pulled them within one. They’ll need to win a game in front of a hungry home crowd before the series shifts to Dallas. Take the Predators at -160.

Against the spread: Nashville dominated the total shot attempts in Game 1, posting a Corsi For rating of 52.44 to Dallas’ 47.56 at 5v5, according to Corsica.Hockey. It’s paying a very tempting +175 for the Preds to cover -1.5, and that’s our play.

Over/under: The total is set at 5, matching Game 1’s output exactly. The better payout is on the UNDER at +105 and we can expect Pekka Rinne to come out sharper.

Colorado Avalanche at Calgary Flames – 10:30 p.m. Eastern

Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

Moneyline: The Flames quickly cast aside any doubt over their chances this postseason, doing away with the Avalanche by a score of 4-0. They’re heavy -236 favorites at home for Game 2 and fully earned our trust for now.

Against the spread: After winning by four in Game 1, betting the Flames at +125 to cover -1.5 seems like an easy play.

Over/under: We can expect the Avalanche to contribute a little more to the offense Saturday. Roll with OVER at -105 odds.
