The defending Western Conference champions, the Vegas Golden Knights, will hit the road to kick off their second-ever postseason run with a battle against the San Jose Sharks. Both of these teams have made deep postseason runs and Stanley Cup Finals appearances in recent seasons, and this series figures to be very close.

Vegas Golden Knights at San Jose Sharks: By the Numbers

  • These teams split the four regular season meetings 2-2, with each team winning once in the other team’s building.
  • Vegas and San Jose met last season in the Western Conference Semifinals, with the Golden Knights winning Game 6 in the Bay Area on May 6, 2018. Two of the six games were decided in overtime, with the home team winning just three times.
  • The Sharks ranked sixth in the NHL in power-play percentage at 22.0 percent, while the Golden Knights were a dismal 16.8 percent to check in 25th in the league.

Marc-Andre Fleury vs. Martin Jones

Fleury was super last season, lifting an expansion team to the Stanley Cup Finals in an unprecedented playoff run. He was dealing with a lower-body injury down the stretch, giving way to Malcolm Subban. However, Fleury returned for two final regular-season starts, losing both while allowing four goals to a pair of non-playoff teams. Still, he finished an impressive 35-21-4 with a 2.51 goals-against average and .913 save percentage with eight shutouts overall.

Jones ended up 36-19-5 with a 2.94 GAA and .896 save percentage, but his high-octane offense helped bail him out most nights when he didn’t have his ‘A’ game. The 29-year-old B.C. native went 2-0-0 in three starts against Vegas in the regular season, but he also has an unsightly 3.62 GAA and .893 save percentage.

Vegas Golden Knights at San Jose Sharks: NHL Best Bet

Moneyline: Both Vegas (+130) and San Jose (-135) struggled down the stretch. The Golden Knights were 0-4 in their final four road games, and 1-7 in the final eight. Meanwhile, the Sharks were 3-9 in their final 12, 2-6 in the final eight home games and 3-8 in the past 11 as favorites. The difference is Fleury, and he helps Vegas steal Game 1.

Against the spread: No way I would touch San Jose (-1.5, +190) even though the payout is tempting. The same holds true for the puck line and Vegas (+1.5, -210). I like the Golden Knights, but there is just too much risk.

Over/under: Taking OVER 6 is a good bet, as the total has went over in seven of the past 10 meetings between these two clubs. The over is also 4-1 in the past five road games for Vegas, and a perfect 4-0 in San Jose’s past four at home.
