New York Yankees at Houston Astros: Projected Starting Pitchers

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

RHP Jonathan Loaisiga vs. RHP Gerrit Cole

Loaisiga, 24, went just four innings in his first start of the year, allowing one earned run and three walks with four strikeouts. There is cause for worry in that he allowed five flyballs and one line drive with just three grounders induced.

Cole is an unlucky 0-2 to start the year despite throwing 19 strikeouts over 12 innings with just three walks and four earned runs. His biggest weakness in the early going has been leaving runners on base, as he’s stranded just 47.2 percent of those who’ve reached.

New York Yankees at Houston Astros: By the Numbers

  • The Astros have won four straight games including Monday’s opener against the Yankees.
  • The Yankees rank fifth in team OPS while Houston comes in at 11th.
  • New York has both a higher strikeout and walk rate than the Astros, ranking fourth in the league in the latter stat.
  • The Astros have been favored in every game this season, while the Yankees will be an underdog for just the second time, and second game in a row.

New York Yankees at Houston Astros: Key Injuries

The Yankees have started the year with unbelievably bad luck on the injury front and remain without OF Giancarlo Stanton, SSs Didi Gregorius and Troy Tulowitzki, 3B Miguel Andujar, and RP Dellin Betances, among others.

Houston’s one key absence is RP Joe Smith, who isn’t expected back until the All-Star break.

New York Yankees at Houston Astros: Picks and Betting Tips

Moneyline: Back the Astros at -184 against the Yankees’ depleted lineup. The young Loaisiga could get into trouble if his flyball troubles persist at Minute Maid.

Against the spread: Just two of Houston’s six wins have come by two or more runs, but that’s the play Tuesday at +114 odds to cover the -1.5 spread.

Over/under: Take the UNDER on the line of runs with -104 odds and expect Cole to handcuff the Yankees’ group of replacement hitters.
