The Pittsburgh Penguins visit the red-hot Detroit Red Wings, winners of five straight, Tuesday night as they look to move ahead of the New York Islanders for second in the Metropolitan Division. Detroit remains firmly in the draft lottery.

The Vegas Golden Knights’ 3-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers saw us go 3-0 in picks Monday. We’re now up to 20-7 in NHL bets.

  • The Red Wings are uncharacteristically hot, having gone 7-3-0 in their past 10 outings. The Penguins come in at 6-2-2 in their past 10.
  • The two have met just once this year but will play again Thursday. Pittsburgh took the first meeting by a score of 5-2 in late December.
  • The Penguins are 21-11-5-3 straight up on the road this season and 21-19 against the spread. The Red Wings are 22-15 ATS at home, but just 14-18-2-3 overall.
  • Pittsburgh has played to the over in just two of its past 10 with Detroit going 4-6 against the number.

Projected Goalie Starters

Matt Murray vs. Jimmy Howard

Murray is 4-1-1-1 over his past seven starts, stopping 223 of 236 shots faced for a .945 save percentage as he heats up in time for the playoffs. He was in net for the Penguins win over the Red Wings earlier this year when he stopped 27 of 29 shots on goal.

Howard has been a big reason for the Red Wings’ too-late late-season surge. He’s won his past four starts and posted a .914 save percentage over his last nine games with a 5-3 record. He took the loss against Pittsburgh earlier this year however, giving up four goals on 39 shots before being pulled.

Key Injuries

Pittsburgh has been missing D Kris Letang and C Evgeni Malkin, contributing to their diminished offensive output of late. They’re listed as day-to-day and week-to-week, respectively, with no word on their availability as of Tuesday morning. They won’t be rushed back to play the Red Wings.

Red Wings D Danny DeKeyser joined a long list of injuries when he left Sunday’s game against the Boston Bruins. The depleted lineup hasn’t negatively affected the team’s play of late.

NHL Best Bet

Moneyline: The Penguins are laying -210 on the road, but it’s wrong to pick against Murray right now. Side with the better team and better goalie.

Against the spread: Bettors can get some money back by taking Pittsburgh to cover -1.5 at +125 odds.

Over/under: The UNDER on a total of comes with the better number at -105. Back Murray to keep the Red Wings stalled as the Penguins continue playing playoff-style hockey.
