Detroit Tigers vs. Toronto Blue Jays: Projected Starting Pitchers

LHP Matthew Boyd vs. RHP Matt Shoemaker

Shoemaker will make his Blue Jays debut after being signed as a low-risk free agent this offseason. The 32-year-old has been plagued by injuries since a 2016 campaign in which he pitched to a 3.88 ERA over 27 starts and a career-high 160 innings. He recorded 102 strikeouts against 38 walks over 108 2/3 innings over the past two seasons.

Boyd, a draft pick of the Blue Jays who started two games for the club in 2015 before being dealt in the package that landed them LHP David Price, started a career-high 31 games last season. His 4.39 ERA and 9-13 record don’t tell the full story from a season in which he struck out 8.4 batters against 2.7 walks per nine innings.

Detroit Tigers vs. Toronto Blue Jays: By the Numbers

  • The two teams combined for just six hits and 22 strikeouts in Thursday’s season opener.
  • Toronto batters drew just one walk in the game, with that being taken by designated hitter Rowdy Tellez.
  • Thursday marked the first time since the 2015 campaign that two-time Tigers MVP Miguel Cabrera didn’t reach base in his first game of a season.

Detroit Tigers vs. Toronto Blue Jays: Picks and Betting Tips

Moneyline: The free-swinging Tigers struggled against Blue Jays RHP Marcus Stroman Thursday, allowing him to set a new personal best with 16 induced swinging strikes. Shoemaker has a better strikeout rate (8.1) over his career than Stroman (7.3). Back Toronto at -138 to even it up.

Against the spread: With just six hits yesterday, it’s tough to pick this one to be decided by more than a run. Go with the Tigers to cover +1.5 at –166.

Over/under: The uninspiring starts for the two offenses didn’t change yesterday’s 8.5 total. Take the UNDER on the same number at -104.
