NHL Best Bet of the Day: Detroit Red Wings at Buffalo Sabres

We picked up the outright win, the under, and spread in the Dallas Stars’ 2-1 underdog victory over the Calgary Flames on Wednesday to push our NHL betting picks record up to 13-5 over the past six days. We’re rolling!

Tonight, we look at the Detroit Red Wings and Buffalo Sabres, who’ll square off at KeyBank Center with puck drop coming shortly after 7 p.m. Eastern.

Odds provided by FanDuel

By the Numbers

  • The two Atlantic Division opponents have met twice this year, with the Sabres picking up a 3-2 shootout win in November and a 3-1 regulation victory in February.
  • Buffalo is 20-13-4-0 at home this season, but just 1-9 overall in its past 10 contests.
  • The Red Wings have 14 road wins in 39 games, but they’ve covered the spread in 23 of those 39 outings.
  • The total is set at 6, which both teams have topped just three times in their respective past 10 outings.

Projected Goalie Starters

Eric Bolte-USA TODAY Sports

Jimmy Howard vs. Carter Hutton

Howard has picked up two straight wins and was given a one-year contract extension last week. He was in net for both prior games against Buffalo this year, going 0-1-0-1 with 51 saves on 56 shots.

Hutton has taken a step back this year under a full workload after leading the league in both save percentage (.931) and goals against average (2.09) last season. Those numbers have dropped to .909 and 2.98.

Key Injuries

Buffalo could remain shorthanded on defense with Rasmus RistolainenZach BogosianMatt Hunwick, and Jake McCabe all questionable with injuries.

The majority of the Red Wings’ injuries are up front, with LW Thomas Vanek being questionable to make his return Thursday.

NHL Best Bet

Moneyline: The depleted Sabres’ defense corps has left them vulnerable of late. The Red Wings enter as +125 dogs on the road. Choose them to get back into the season series after two close losses.

Against the spread: It’s -210 to take the Red Wings to cover +1.5. Take the much better number for the outright win.

Over/under: The Sabres are averaging 1.68 goals for per 60 minutes of even strength play since March 1, with the Red Wings scoring 1.51 goals per 60 at 5-on-5, according to Corsica.Hockey. The power plays both rank in the bottom half of the league. Take the under at -125.
