MLB Picks and Bets: Los Angeles Angels at Oakland Athletics

The Angels and A’s will do battle in the Bay Area, and both teams are searching for their first victory of the season. Of course, it’s Opening Day, right? Well, Oakland already has two games under their belt from their Japan Series, and they lost both games to the Seattle Mariners.

Los Angeles Angels at Oakland Athletics: Projected Starting Pitchers

RHP Trevor Cahill vs. RHP Mike Fiers

Cahill takes the ball in his team debut, and he’ll be pitching in a familiar stadium, as he spent the 2018 season with the A’s. The 10-year-veteran made 20 starts and one relief appearance for the A’s last season turning in an impressive 7-4 record, 3.76 ERA and 1.19 WHIP across 110 innings while striking out 100 batters. His 1.3 WAR was his best since the 2012 season when he was a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Fiers will be making his second regular-season start, and he hopes it’s a better time than in Tokyo when he was tuned up by the M’s. He lasted just three frames, allowing five earned runs, including a grand slam, while walking two and striking out three battles to slip to 0-1 with a 15.00 ERA.

Los Angeles Angels at Oakland Athletics: By the Numbers

  • The A’s really seemed to respond under Fiers at home last season, winning six of his final seven regular-season starts, and eight of his final nine outings overall.
  • They’re also a perfect 8-0 in his past eight outings on a natural grass surface.
  • However, Mike Trout is 8-for-19 (.421) with four doubles, two homers and seven RBI vs. Fiers, while Albert Pujols has also cracked two homers in 24 career ABs against the righty.

Los Angeles Angels at Oakland Athletics: Key Injuries

Cahill draws the assignment with Andrew Heaney (shoulder) on the 10-day injured list and Tyler Skaggs (forearm) slow to return from a nagging injury in the spring. Justin Upton also starts on the I.L. due to turf toe. Matt Olson (hand) is also out indefinitely, so the A’s shored up their lineup by adding Kendrys Morales from the Blue Jays on Wednesday.

Los Angeles Angels at Oakland Athletics: Picks and Betting Tips

Moneyline: The A’s (-116) are slight favorites at home against the Halos, who lost four of their final five against the Athletics last season.

Against the spread: The moneyline is essentially a coin flip, and this one should be a close game. Neither L.A. (+1.5, -205) nor Oakland (-1.5, +172) is worth taking on the run line.

Over/under: The ‘over’ (8.5) has cashed in each of the past eight meetings in Oakland, while going 18-7-1 in the past 26 meetings overall.
