NHL Best Bet of the Day: Carolina Hurricanes at Washington Capitals

Welcome to another glorious day of NHL betting following our first 3-for-3 night of the season, thanks to the Tampa Bay Lightning’s epic third-period comeback against the Boston Bruins on Monday. This improved us to 8-4 over the past four days.

Tuesday, we’re teeing up the Carolina Hurricanes battle with the Washington Capitals which will begin at 7 p.m. Eastern at Capital One Arena.

Odds provided by PointsBet

By the Numbers

  • The Hurricanes roll into Washington having won four of their past five. The Capitals have dropped three of five with as many goals for as against over that span.
  • The defending Stanley Cup champions lead the season series with regulation and shootout wins in Washington and Carolina, respectively.
  • Both teams have gone over the projected total in five of their last 10 outings. Washington has gone over the number in 19 of 38 home games, while the Hurricanes have gone under in 21 of 37 road outings.
  • The Capitals’ last six wins have all been by at least two goals. They’re 11-4-1 in March, outscoring opponents by a combined 15 goals.
  • Carolina is 11-3-0 this month with a plus-12 goal differential.

Projected Goalie Starters

Curtis McElhinney vs. Braden Holtby

McElhinney is 2-2-1 over five starts dating back to March 5. He’s 10-2-1 when facing at least 30 shots on goal. The Capitals rank 13th in the NHL with 58.25 shot attempts (Corsi data: Includes blocked and missed shots) per game at home.

Holtby’s coming off his highest save total since Feb. 2, stopping 35 of 36 in a win over the Philadelphia Flyers Sunday.

NHL Best Bet

Moneyline: Take the Capitals at home as a -140 favorite. They’re 22-10-5-1 in Washington this season.

Against the spread: The spread is the better pick for Washington at +180 to cover -1.5. Six of their past seven wins as the favorite have been by at least two goals.

Over/under: I’d rather this line be 5.5 or even 6.5 than the even 6 it’s sitting at. Take the over at -115, but a push seems like the most probable outcome.
